Uprawr Studios Band Report - July 2016
What Are Our Bands Up To?
Our favorite people in the entire universe are the wonderful bands that rehearse at UPRAWR Studios. Here’s our weekly roundup of the awesome stuff they have going on.
We’ve been seeing a lot of Memoriam over the last few weeks, which has been brilliant, if a little loud! This has been in preparation for their summer festival stint, which has just annihilated the fans over at OBSCENE festival in the Czech Republic this past weekend, and will be hitting Germany, France, Norway and the good old UK at Bloodstock Festival on the 14th of August.
Formed from members of the incredible Bolt Thrower and Benediction, Memoriam are an Old School Death Metal band and maintain the standards set by previous bands that the members have played with, focusing on the themes of death, loss and war. They’ve been shaking the walls of UPRAWR Studios ever since they formed the band in January of this year. Having just signed a deal with Nuclear Blast last month, and with their debut record ready to drop any time now, you can expect to be hearing a lot more about these guys over the coming months. For now, you can check out THIS LITTLE SNIPPET to really build the anticipation.
I always love it when Ranking Roger comes to UPRAWR Studios. Apart from being a complete legend, he’s also one of the most intelligent, articulate people that I’ve ever had the pleasure of conversing with, and we usually have a good chat about the state of the world over a coffee after he’s done rehearsing with Birmingham’s finest 2 Tone Ska revival band, The Beat
The Beat have been making awesome music since 1978, and they’ve recently announced that September 2016 will see the release of their first studio album since 1982. I’ll do the maths for you; that’s 34 years. I’ve had the absolute delight of being played a couple of the tracks from the album, and it sounds absolutely incredible! You can get a taste of it from the video-single they released a couple of weeks ago RIGHT HERE
Oceans Ate Alaska
I was wondering the other day why it’s seemed just a little bit quieter down the corridor in Room 7 recently, and then it struck me that Oceans Ate Alaska [link to FB] have been over in the US of A on the Warped Tour for over a month now, and judging by THIS VIDEO, it’s been going rather well. Those of you with keen eyes might have spotted an UPRAWR Studios sofa in their promo material for the tour, like HERE for instance.
The wonderful and friendly-as-fuck progressive metalcore outfit will be out in the States for another few weeks yet, for all those lucky Warped Tour goers. I’m really looking forward to them coming back to be honest, not least because Adam owes me a beer.
Kroh are fucking ace, and I’m not just saying that because one of them works here. If you have even the slightest passing interest in doom, sludge, or female-fronted metal, give THIS a listen and tell me they’re not fucking ace. I dare you.
The killer news this week from these guys is that their album will be out in September, and pre-orders for their gorgeous black-and-orange vinyl are live now. GO GRAB ONE before they sell out! Also, they may or may not have done a little bit of a video thing here at UPRAWR Studios recently, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to tell you that… What I AM sure of is that if you or your band want to get a bit of a video thing going on at UPRAWR Studios or either of the Asylum Venues, you can get in touch with us in the usual way, and we will hook you right up.
Here’s one for ya! Is this still the city of love?! Etc. Whitesnake UK are legitimately the best tribute to Coverdale and co. you’ll ever hope to find. If bluesy hard-rock and songs with the word ‘Love’ in the title are your thing, you can check out Whitesnake UK Live ‘In The Heart Of Your City’…provided that city happens to be Cannock and you’re free on Friday the 5th of August.
Often, I find it hard to tell if it’s Anaal Nathrakh rehearsing down the corridor of UPRAWR Studios, or if it’s simply a portal to hell that has spontaneously opened up in room 8. Birmingham’s very own extreme metal legends have a new album on the way, and will be celebrating the fact with a hometown show at the Hare And Hounds in Kings Heath. Be sure to check out their AMAZING RECENT COVER of Iron Maiden’s opus Powerslave, which appeared as part of Maiden Heaven vol 2 on the front of Kerrang Magazine last month alongside Stone Sour, Trivium, Fozzy and others.
My guilty pleasure has always been power ballads, and the utterly fantastic Apollo Soul have a great selection of them in their set. Normally to be seen at those really, really good weddings you see in brochures at the hairdressers, Apollo Soul are going to be playing a show at Birmingham’s Jamhouse on Thursday the 11th of August. I’ll be there, slightly too drunk, singing along way out of key, and awkwardly flirting with a chair or something. Just like a wedding, now I think about it.
Among The Echoes
Among The Echoes are a powerhouse of synth-rock, darwave, and drinking more coffee than any other band at UPRAWR Studios. So much so that I am trying my best to come up with a signature Among The Echoes latte. I’m thinking it’s going to have neon milk and a picture of Gary Numan’s face sprinkled on top in chocolate. You can catch Among The Echoes on tour with Canadian journeymen The Birthday Massacre across the UK in September and October this year.
If your band rehearses at UPRAWR Studios and has something cool coming up that we can plug in the blog, on Facebook and on our walls, let us know! Send us a message, give us a call, or tell us to our beautiful faces next time you’re in.
What We’re Listening To This Month
Do you care what we have on our Spotify playlists, iPods and Mark’s ancient car stereo (seriously, it has a fucking tape player)? No? Too bad. Here’s What We’re Listening To
Jordan – Purity Ring –“She sounds a bit like Lorde. Not that I listen to Lorde.” Wise words, Jord, nice one.
Mark – North – “North are basically the sonic equivalent of getting slowly kicked in the nutsack by an angry Stegosaurus. And that’s totally my vibe.”
Rych – Tears For Fears – “I’m going to see them next week, aren’t I? Why are you even asking?”
Richie – Jose Gonzales – “I remember this from the Red Dead Redemption soundtrack, one of the most emotional moments in any videogame!” – And a fantastic song, too!
Elle – Nothing – “One of my headphones has broken. I need to go to the Apple Store.”
Got anything you want to sell to the wonderful people who read the blog? Pop us a message on Facebook or give us a call!
Female vocalist wanted for Birmingham-based covers band Sound Asylum. “We usually rehearse on a Wednesday and have regular gigs. Our set list includes a mixture of styles such as pop, soul, ska and disco. Must be committed.” Interested? Call Gary on 07981364843.

Jordan and Chris (who some of the regulars might recognise, because they work here and at the UPRAWR club) are looking for other members for a fresh steaming pile of new hard rock! Influences include ACDC, Zepplin and the like through to Buckcherry, Black Stone Cherry, Cherry Pie, Cherry Garcia, Cheri Blair...wait, I think I've gone too far. If you're a drummer/bassist/vocalist/all three (you talented bastard), ideally between the ages of 18-25 (you lucky young bastard) and you're interested in jamming with a couple of really very good guitarists, get in touch with Chris on HIS FACEBOOK.
